Book Report 1

I decided to read "My two Moms: Lessons of Love, Strength, and What Makes a Family" by Zach Wahls. I decided to do my book report on this book because while I was surfing you tube, I came across Zach giving a speech in Iowa about Gay Marriage. I watched his speech and was inspired and absolutely agreed with what Zach said and what he believed in. Here is the link I watched http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSQQK2Vuf9Q In his speech he talked about how gay marriage should be allowed in Iowa and how it is okay for two people of the same sex to be married. He was the son of a gay couple and he used himself in his example of how someone who is raised by two gay people can turn out normal, successful even being a engineering student as well as an eagle scout. In the book, Wahls discusses how having gay parents is just like having normal loving parents except with the politics that other people try to force on them. In the book, Wahls discussed how his parents really stressed about being kind to other kids and it was a virtue that he grew up with. His parents said "Since I was a little boy, my moms have impressed upon me how important it is to be kind." All parents should press love and kindness onto their children as virtues yet in my own school I see many of my peers that have parents that do not express the same kind of virtues with their children. It is funny that people stress that two gay people could not be good parents and role models yet here is Wahls, a eagle scout and a good student who was taught good virues yet even in my own school where (I think) all of the parents are heterosexual, they are not taught the same kind of virtues and morals that Wahls knows. People have to realize that whatever the sexual nature of the parents, it is the virtues, morals and ideals that create the kind of person their child is. Wahls shows us this in his book and the way he acts towards other people. While Wahls was in first grade his parents told him to not fight but be the better person. When at school the next day he was being bullied by a kid who was telling him he would never be a man and was too weak to even through the dodgeball in PE. Wahls could have said many things and acted inappropriately yet what Wahls did was tell the kid he "feel sorry for you" because he of how his parents raised him. It is because of the way Wahls's parents raised him that he is the kind of person that he is today and just like any other family, it is up to the parents to set the values that the children should look up to. Same sex marriage should be allowed because it is not because someone is married to someone of the other sex that would suddenly "make" the child weird and different. It is up to the parent's teachings and values that will help a child grow and become who they are.

Issues: Renewable Energies

Looking at some of the information from this article, this is the information I found:
  • Fossil Fuels although theoretically renewable, we are extinguishing them faster than they can be replenished.
  • United States makes about 1/3 of all geothermal energy in the world.
  • Alternative energies are on the move with 20% of Denmark's energy coming from wind power.
  • Geothermal energy makes nearly no emissions at all and the only thing that comes from it are some bad smells occasionally.
  • Wind power is becoming more streamlined and efficient and can mitigate the effects of hurting birds, making noise, and taking up too much space.
  • Photovoltaic cells are linked together to create solar panels. This is the only source in able to directly convert the pure energy of the sun to usable energy.
  • In the coming years, alternative energies will become more prominent because the cost of fossil fuels will increase do to their rarity and because alternative energies will become even more advanced.
I believe that with this information I can help show others what alternative energies are and what they can do. I found this interesting myself by learning how solar energy is collected by photovoltaic cells.

Ebsco Database: "Global Warming"

This article discussed some of what global warming is and what is a part of the history of global warming. Here are some of the information that they discussed:
  • Koyoto Protocal: A legislation stating that the countries who signed the document would decrease the amount of greenhouse gasses that they will release by 5%. The United States did not sign this document.
  • Jean-Baptiste Fourier (1768-1830) believed that solar energy got trapped in the atmosphere and would lead to a raising the the earth's temperature.
  •  John Tyndall (1820-1893) suggested that when carbon dioxide gets caught in the atmosphere it captures infrared rays and warms the earth.
  • Charles Keeling (1928-2005). measured carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and all scientist believe his research and is the most widely used.
  • Raising in the temperature of the earth can cause more natural disasters such as hurricanes and weather patterns around the globe.
This information explains more about the history of global warming and how we knew more about this before it has become a pressing problem.

National Geographic and Global Warming

Looking through some of the websites advised by our teacher, I found out that there are lots of information showing that global warming does exist.
From National Geographic:
"Now, humans have increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by more than a third since the industrial revolution. Changes this large have historically taken thousands of years, but are now happening over the course of decades"
Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas which means that in the atmosphere, it can trap the heat of the sun instead of having the rays bounce off the earth and go through our atmosphere. Having more carbon dioxide increases the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere which will warm up our planet. This is not a theory, it is a present issue happening now. As the quote above states, our planet is heating up over a period of decades which should be happening over the course of a few thousand years. National Geographic points out that Glacier national park now has 27 glaciers when in 1910, there were 150 glaciers. This change happened in just a few centuries when it should have happened over thousands of years. These changes happening in our world are happening too quickly. National Geographic also states that the IPCC notices that the temperature of earth is rising, nearly 11 out of the last 12 years are the hottest on record. The government of the USA also recognizes global warming because Bush stated that anthropogenic carbon dioxide is responsible for global warming. Anthropogenic means that humans are responsible for global warming.

Times Have Changed

Technology has continued its influence on our world throughout our existence. From the wheel to the i-phone they have all effected the world and the way it works. A good question our world should ask itself is "is all of this technology good for us?". Last year the question arose if smart phones were bad for our bodies because they use higher levels of waves, microwaves instead of radio waves. Many things have helped us continue to grow such as the Internet. In order to find the answer to something many people had to go to the nearest library and search for an answer but in this day and age, people can type into their smart phones and it will come up with an answer on the spot anywhere in the world. Technology has also saved millions of lives. Polio, anthrax and small pox used to be deadly diseases that were impossible to cure but they are now nearly wiped out around the entire world. Yet with all of these good things impacting the world, there have been some unfortunate things that have come with the advancement of technology. People are becoming less social in person than in the past. People used to talk to whomever was around them but in the 21st century with nearly 114 million smart phones being used in the USA which is more than half the amount of people with phones being smart phone users. In my own life I have noticed that my colleges at my lunch table have been less talkative because so many people are preoccupied using their smart phones. When I look at other tables even more people will be on their phones rather than talk to their friends. This is a frightening revolution to see people being less social in person. Technology has also increased the amount of social interaction between people too such as social media and websites like Facebook, Twitter, and My space. Technology has its upsides and downsides but overall, it has more upsides. Technology saves lives, allows more people access to information that they may not have otherwise and creates even more forms of entertainment. It has enhanced my own life far more than it has damaged it and technology has had more positive impacts on our world than negative ones.

Stereotypes: Skaters

As I walk through my high school on a late start many students are paying more attention to me, staring even. I walk to my locker and put away my carver board, basically a larger skateboard. My friends come up and are surprised as I put my board away and ask me why I would ever do something like that. I ask what, and they tell me "why would you skate?". Skating has been a hobby of mine for about the past year or two and I use it as a past time and a motive of transportation. I asked my friends and some of my acquaintances what they thought about skaters and their responses varied only slightly. They would say druggies, dangerous, drugs, mean, cocky, and rebels. I was surprised by their answer but then again they were surprised I was a skater. A certain stigma comes with being a skater and many people only expect something bad to come from someone who is a skater. The city of Chicago believes does not allow skaters in the business districts which is a great deal of Chicago. This is due to their belief that skaters were driving of business. I found this frustrating because not everyone who is a skater is a rebel or fit the stereotype. If anything, I am the exact opposite of the skater stereotype; I am the drum major of my school's marching band and I am also an Eagle Scout. Yet when I walk around school with my carver board people look at me differently and my friends were completely caught off guard when I told them. My parents began to worry that I was getting into drugs when I first started skating but I wasn't. People began to perceive things about me just because I was skating around even though it was just a hobby of mine, it did not define who I was or my personality. There are nearly 11.08 million skaters nation wide and yet this stigma seems to follow skaters. It is a shame that people fall back onto stereotypes because it is easier to do than learning who a person is even if that stereotype does not fit them. People must learn to stop listening to stereotypes and learn who people really are at their core.

IAT Tests

I believe the results I got were kind of far off. It said I had an automatic bias to European Americans. I believe that I do not, I have hardly even met anyone who is African American so it is difficult for me to see why I would have a bias in the first place. The page says that biases begin at the age of three, which is a surprising age for someone to begging having opinions yet even more interesting because sometimes they do not know that they have them. I believe that this does change some of my thoughts about the movie "I Sit Where I Want" because much of these biases are not conscious, they are subconscious. Many of the people that were in the movie said that they thought that they had no preference for black or white they just happened to sit with black or white people. I believe that they began sitting at their tables because they went with their gut instinct when they first went into high school. This would make them rely on their biases for the first little bit. After they got acquainted to high school they would then branch out but they would always stick with their roots, which is where their biases told them to be because the people you first meet you tend to have a greater bonding strength. Biases are interesting because it is difficult for people to realize that they have a bias but even more difficult for people to get over their biases and move on with their lives. What the school in the movie we watched was trying to do was help get rid of the biases people have by intergrating the schools and making a project to have all of the people in the lunch room sit together. I can imagine that trying to have another person get rid of ones biases is next to impossible. The person who has a bias must get rid of it. The problem with the school was that all of the students believed that the other race should come to them and get rid of their biases but they never wanted to do anything to help the other race either become rid of their biases or show them that they were similiar. Each race belived that the other race should do the work and show that they were not as they appeared to other people.

National Parks Not Allowing Dogs

olympic-national-park.jpg

National Parks in the US do not allow dogs to be allowed in their parks except for Sleeping Bear Dunes. There are 59 protected National Parks and only one out of those 59 allows dogs to be allowed on the premises. The rule of banning dogs should be kept in National Parks. When people go hiking on trails a majority of those people will allow their dogs to be off leash and most dogs will run straight to the woods where they will trample the wildlife searching for new smells. Not only are the dogs to blame for their nature but so are humans. When dogs are outside they tend to do their business outside as well because that is how they are trained. Humans may forget to bring a baggie or run out of baggies and this poop would be all over the trails. Although this seems to be a odd reason because several of the National Parks allow horses to be on their trails and horses tend to poop a lot more often not to mention it being harder to clean up. Another reason National Parks tend to be so restrictive on allowing dogs to be allowed on trails is because dogs are the natural predator to many of the animals in National Parks such as prairie dogs and other small protected animals. Pets that are brought into National Parks also have a natural instinct to mark their territory and by doing this, they could potentially be spreading diseases. Many of the trails are small and narrow where pets such as dogs could hurt fragile wildlife by running off the trail. Not only is this for the protection of the park but also for the pet owners themselves. Pets may attract predators such as mountain lions and this could cause injure to the owner as well as the pet. Bison, a common animal in the National Parks tend to not get along well with dogs so at Theodore Roosevelt park there are signs saying "bison and dogs don't mix". This law banning dogs in most National Parks should be kept in place as a protective law. Even if pets do not show that much of a threat to wildlife in National Parks, the Parks are made to preserve wildlife and by keeping the rule of banning pets they are helping preserve the wildlife.

Pet Lovers Unite!

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8f/ChinchillaKR.jpg

Having a pet is a source of pride for many people including myself. I have a dog and used to own a sand boa and a leopard gecko. When I come home from a stressful day at school or am going through a tough time I find that it is really helpful to pet my dog stress. It seems his happy attitude always brightens my day. People that do not have dogs or other pets should considering getting one for a variety of reasons. Many people deal with stress in their every day life and nearly 77% of people in the US live with stress related symptoms that effect their daily life. But having a dog or other pet can help reduce the stress that people have. According to WebMD, people with depression tend to feel happier and better when they have a pet to take care of. Pets are not just a burden but can help people overcome stress because most pets offer unconditional love, help people get into a routine which means consistency in their life, companionship, the touch of pet has also shown to reduce heart rate, and activity by helping people get off their butt and get some activity to not only keep their pet in shape but themselves. Many people worry about dogs and cats being to hairy or believe that they cannot get a pet because they are allergic to everyday household pets. The truth is that there are dogs that are hypo-allergenic such as the Bichon Frisé, Yorkshire Terrier, Poodle, Italian Greyhound, and Samoyed are just a few of the many choices a dog owner can make towards getting a hypo-allergenic dog. For me, dogs are the best house pet. From experience I can say that they will come running up to you every time you enter the house and are always happy to see you, especially when you give them their dinner. There is a pet for every person, just want to feed your pet once a month? try getting a snake. Do you want a pet that will come with you on a morning run? a dog might be the right choice for you. Want a pet that will last for maybe 18 years and always be soft and cuddly? try a chinchilla. Pets are exciting animals that everyone should enjoy, not only because they are so cute but because they can help you with the relieving the stress you may posses.

Eagle Scout

Being an Eagle Scout comes with many perks. Many colleges and employers look for Eagle Scouts from Boy Scouts of America because these scouts that have accomplished something many people have not done. They have been in the scouting program for numerous years as well as completing merit badges that will help them in future situations such as personal management which helps scouts learn about budgeting, saving, and how to invest in stocks. Another skill that Eagle Scouts come with is the ability to see their goals to the very end. In order to be an Eagle Scout one must complete a service project that they made, planned, got approved, completed to the satisfaction of the beneficiary as well as having a final conference with a board from the scout's council to decide if they deserve the eagle award. Many scouts try to become and Eagle Scout and only two out of every one hundred will become one. Boy Scouts are also very well rounded with 85% of FBI agents being Boy Scouts at one time, and nearly 90% of class presidents being Boy scouts at one time. The Scouting program helps boys become well rounded individuals who strive for high goals and who are able to succeed them. Yet recently, many Eagle scouts have turned in their Eagle Scout award back to the BSA. The reason for this is because the BSA is a program that was made by Mormons. Mormons believe that homosexuality is wrong and they made a ruling that gay leaders are not allowed in Boy Scouts. Officially 250 Eagle scouts turned in their eagle scout award because they didn't believe that Boy Scouts of America should ban gay leaders from helping boys in their troops. Giving up an award that lands people jobs, makes others look at you as a leader, and shaped who they are is a really tough thing to do, yet people were so disgusted by the fact that the BSA was so against gays that they banned them as leader that people were willing to give back their eagle scout award for this cause. I was very disappointed that the BSA was not allowing gay leaders in because they are just normal people who want to help young boys grow up and learn life skills. Not every gay is a pedophile. It is disappointing that the BSA assumed this and banned gay leaders in fear of this. Mormons also believe that being gay is a sin which probably led them to banning gay leaders into the scouting program too. Personally, I had an experience that bothered me because of the BSA's decision. AS I was selling popcorn by a grocery store, a man came out with a boukey of flowers and I asked him if he would like to buy some popcorn to support the boy scouts. He snottily "no. im gay." and walked off as though I had offended him. This bothered me because this was not something I had any control over and it had lost me a sale to allow me to pay for my scouting dues. Hopefully the BSA will see what they have done wrong and reverse their decision that may have effected many scouts such as myself and for the sake of people turning in their Eagle Scout rank.

The Class Talk

In class the other day we discussed an issue about a 15 year old girl who told her parents she went to a party, got so drunk that she couldn't remember anything from the night before and woke up seeing nude pictures of her on the Internet. Two football players were convicted of sexual assault yet nothing has been decided about whether or not the football players actually did. Everyone at the party was drinking yet nothing came out in the press about a case about under-age drinking. In the article I read I was surprised that nothing happened to the players that were at the party and were drinking. One of the coaches were in charge of disciplining the players because of the drinking and going to the party. The coach decided not to punish the players because he asked the students if they believed they did anything wrong and they said no so he decided not to punish the players. I was shocked that the coach decided not to punish or at least bench the players from a game. In our school, if a person does something even slightly contreversial while on a team or in a club, they get banned from it for most of their season. One example of this in our school is the girls swim team. During Homecoming the classes all dress up in their class colors yet this year the deans decided it would be a great idea to make everyone just red and grey. The seniors rebelled agianst this idea and wore all black but the girls swim coach said that if he saw anyone wearing black that day they would be banned from one of the biggest meets of the year against our school's biggest rival. It was not against the school rules or policies if someone wore black on the school colors day but the swim coach saw it as going against what the school was trying to promote. Something as little as wearing black on a day where everyone else is wearing red and grey would result in getting benched from a game yet in the article we read, going to a party, getting drunk, and showing up in pictures at a party where a girl was taken pictures of is nude was okay in the coaches decision. I believe that sports players are held up to a higher standard then the average person and I believe this is a good thing. If you want to be apart of something bigger than yourself then you should be living up to higher standards. I also believe that everyone should be held to higher standards because that would effect communities in a posotive way and eventually the world. If everyone lived to a higher standard and tried to be respectful of others and not do irresponsible things such as going out and taking nude pictures of someone while everyone is drunk, the world would be able to be much more effective and many horrible moments would dissappear such as the one about the 15 year old girl. Here is a little video of people raising the social bar and the world becoming a better place and how it could be better, enjoy :)

Outside Writing: Final Blog

The book They Poured Fire on us from the Sky has many ideas wrapped within its cover. Some of its main ideas are about government, slavery, war, and disease. This book explores these different ideas by having Lost Boys from Sudan talk about their experiences of escaping the war and living on their own by moving from refugee camp, to work camps and through their escapes from slavery. This book shows the problems that they have as they struggle to find safety within their own country. They eventually find safety in Kakuma which is a refugee camp in Kenya. From there, they get to America where they have help from the author of this book, Judy Bernstein. While reading this book, there are many issues that arise which do not happen in many other countries such as America. A question that begins to come up is: why does one country end up with so many problems that do not exist in other countries? A possible answer to this question is that different countries may not listen to their peoples needs and the government does not do their part to help their citizens. A majority of the problems that happened in Sudan was because of the war that happened. If the government had not begun the war within itself many of the problems that settled within its borders may not have happened. The government should have worked on helping its citizens and listening to their needs so disease, slavery and other issues could be solved. The main issue with that kept coming up was the government would not listen to its people but began creating problems within itself. When a government helps support the people within its borders progress can be made to solve problems but when the government does not help its people but instead brings war on its country, the country crumbles and many of the people have issues that would not have appeared. Without a giving government, the people within its borders will have more issues without it.

Outside Reading 4: War

The book They Poured Fire on us from the Sky all revolves and is written because of the war that goes on in Sudan. This war was against the government trying to make their country Islamic and the SPLA (Sudan People's Liberation Army). What the government would do is find areas that are not Islamic or that they believed had any interaction with SPLA and destroy that village or area. Sudan's government would come in and take the women and children in the village and lock them in their houses and burn the houses to the ground. The Sudan government would then take the men and kill them and throw them into rivers or ditches. The government did not care if a person was apart of the SPLA or just a civilian, if someone was not apart of their side they were to be killed. Unlike most wars nowadays, people will not just kill someone in war off of a hunch because they are rules to war. One example of this could be the Afghanistan war because the US army gets bombed by civilians often yet they are not allowed to just go around killing civilians just because they may be associated with a terrorist association. One of the Lost Boys describes how he felt the government thought about him and people his age. He says "Thousands die a hundred are born a day. Who cares about your life at your age? Our lives seemed no consequence to them." The government gave no regard to the young people that would be effected by this and how horrible their massacres were. The government would even bomb schools and other community areas. One Lost Boy said that the SPLA wanted to continue education and protect those in danger from the government. It is not right that the side opposing the government is looking out for the civilians education and rights. A government is in place to maintain order and to help its people yet the government is not doing this. War is primitive and is used when people are not able to come to an agreement. War should be something of the past, killing people brutally is not the way solutions should be found. What the government of Sudan was doing was also immoral. They were killing innocent people, destroying villages and schools. It is wrong for war to happen in the first place but it is even worse that when it happens innocent people are put in harms way and in this war, they were some of the largest targets. Stop the needless killing and this will stop the war.

Outside Reading 3: Disease

A common trend that kept showing up in the book They Poured Fire on us from the Sky is one of disease. Nearly every last boy that told his story in the book had a disease or was stuck in a work camp because they had to help their friends and family that would die without their help. An example of how horrible some of the camps such as Kakuma, which was a refugee camp, was in a quote from one of the Lost Boys stating "nutritional diseases were rampant in the camp". Another one of the Lost Boys, Alepho, described his experience of when he got malaria. Since he did not receive the malaria shot he was sick for weeks upon weeks to get over. Many of the diseases that were found in the different camps or that were caused from running from the war could have been easily prevented. When kids in my school get sick they go home where they are safe from other diseases and sicknesses/germs and will try to get better by taking different antibiotics. One of the Lost Boys got pink eye and it took months to heal because there was no way to keep away the sickness or any way to receive remedies that were available. On many of the Lost Boys travels, they recollected their travels through different swamps and their overall experience on the travels to different camps. One of the Lost Boys remembers specifically going through one river where many of the travelers in his group died from snake bites. This is not a sickness or disease yet many of those people could have been saved if there was access to antivenin which cures the body of venom from various snake bites. Diseases were very common in camps as one Lost Boy wrote "kids got malaria a lot and sometimes other diseases".  Malaria is preventable and a curable disease so it is very disappointing that so many children would receive malaria. If they did not receive the shots before they got malaria, it is quite possible that many of these children did not receive the antidote once they got malaria. The largest result from people not getting cured is death. More than half a million people die each year from malaria which is curable! Curable! This means that these deaths did not have to end this tragic way. This book brought awareness to diseases and nutritional inefficiencies which can be prevented and cured. Recognizing this, people can be prepared by finding places that can help with malaria and other disease protection. One simple way to prevent malaria is to sleep with bug nets so mosquitoes that are carriers of the the malaria disease cannot bite them. This is the 21st century, we have outgrown the inability to protect ourselves from many diseases and it is a duty for all people to help those who can be saved from preventable diseases. No person should have to die because of a curable disease because they do not have the resources or are unable to access the cure.

Outside Reading 2: Slavery

A part of the book They Poured Fire on us from the Sky was about slavery. Although slavery seems abolished in the United States yet it still exists in some places such as Sudan. One of the lost boys in this book was enslaved and he says he was forced to a "faraway place where he was sold as a slave". He was then passed as a slave to different people. His jobs varied from working in the fields, cleaning, cooking and doing other difficult tasks. One of the Lost Boys, described what happened and the stories he heard while he was still in his home village. He says "However, their parents were killed and many of the sisters sold into slavery." Slavery in my mind, used to happen and has since been abolished. Yet as I read this book, I discovered that many people are still in the shackles of slavery. The conditions of being a slave were brutal. One of the Lost Boys in the book, Deng, described his experience of being a slave during Sudan's war. He said that if anyone tried to escape the escapee would be punished by death in front of all the other slaves just as an example of what could happen. Being a slave entitled very little food and none of the owners called their slaves by name. Most slave owners such as the one that Deng had called them "Black trash". This was horribly demeaning and this bombarded their emotions. Not only did slave owners attempt to break down their slaves emotionally but they also did physically. Slave owners regularly beat their slaves as the slave owner in this book did with Deng. When Deng tried to escape he was beaten nearly to death and was then sentenced to death for attempting to escape. Luckily for him, the slave owner's daughter begged for his life to be sparred and it was. His new punishment was to not be fed for several days which only made him weaker but he still had to perform at the same level as before. Not only is slavery wrong and should never happen but the conditions that exist for slaves are incredibly brutal such as the story of Deng displays. Slavery should be abolished because no human being should have to experience the horrors that accompany slavery. Having to live your life in fear of another beating, having to work for others doing strenuous labor and never receiving a cent for your labors is unjust and no one should have to live through those kind of horrors. Yet this is still going on in Sudan and people are still in slavery. To think about America and to know that slavery still exists here disgusts me. Slavery should be abolished everywhere, it is unjust to allow slavery to continue. I hope by spreading awareness of this subject will help bring awareness to those that can have more of an impact than me to stop slavery.

Outside Reading 1: Government

The book They Poured on us From the Sky is a book about the children of Sudan and their experience when they escaped the war in Sudan and moved into different camps and eventually arriving to America. A major topic in this book is the government. An issue that continues to rise up is the government trying to take too much control over the country. The Sudan government wants to make their country entirely Muslim and the characters in this book are not Muslim. The government would then take villages that were not Muslim or were supporting any type of uprising and burn them to the ground, including all of the people in it. The government of Sudan began this entire take over by killing off students that attended universities to hopefully have less people realizing what was going on. The government then moved onto elementary schools and started bombing those too. This is a major issue; a government should not try to kill off its inhabitants because it wants to change something in its system. What Sudan did was killed of their students and began burning down villages and killing people who were in anyway not fully for their cause. The book quotes "(the) Government starting killing all the smart students". A government is made to help create order and help those that live in its territories. What Sudan was doing was a take over and stopped listening to the people who lived in its borders. America is a place where people have the freedom to believe in whatever religion that they wish to believe in and praise any god or none at all. This is the way a government should be, willing to have their citizens decide who or what they want to worship. The narrators of the book discussed how they enjoyed that their women were able to have the freedoms that they had. The women were looked upon as respectful people and some would even become the head of the house if their man was absent and would sometimes join the men in battle. The people in this book did not want their women to have their rights taken away. They did not want their women to have to stay covered and to have much of the powers and rights that they owned to be taken away. No person should have to live their life being under someone else or not be able to wear what they want in fear of being beaten up. The government of a country should support its schooling and encourage the education. This is something that many people in America take for granted, a public education. Yet the government of Sudan was killing educated people, students and even bombing elementary schools. No government should be taking the lives of its citizens like they did in such brutal ways such as burning people alive in their houses or just coming into villages that could possibly be against a few of their beliefs. Governments should be supportive of education, the prosperity of its citizens and the freedom of religion.
